(Trojan Odyssey (T.O.) is one of the more prolific posters on The Herd Forum. He usually elicits strong emotions from other Trojans. They either appreciate his posts or wish he would become a Bruin fan, never to be heard from again on the Herd Forum. The Herdblog isn't promoting controversy, just found this post from Trojan Odyssey very eloquent in its defense of Pete Carroll and the USC program as again today USC football is beset by more calls of foul play)

Joe McKnight misspoke:
Why is that so hard for the know-it-alls or haters to understand? I know some people that can't keep their foot out of their own mouth if their life depended on it. Usually the same people are the ones crying foul.
From the L.A. Times, 2-09-2007, "After being informed of Carroll's denial Thursday night, Curtis called McKnight. He later said the player told him he never heard Bush on a speakerphone. "He said when they came in his house, the discussion was brought up about probation and that's when the conversation came up that they had talked to Reggie, but Joe was not there," Curtis said. "He said, 'I was not on the speakerphone. I never called him and he never called me. I want to make it clear I never spoke to Reggie and he never spoke to me. I just messed it up. I shouldn't have said it that way [at the news conference].' " Curtis said McKnight might have been overcome Wednesday by the attention and scrutiny that accompanied his announcement. "At the press conference, it seemed like he got 1,000 questions in five minutes," about the controversy surrounding Bush and possible sanctions, Curtis said. "If you saw what was going on it would be easier to understand."

Alas, teams at the top are always hit with venom from the haters. As far as USC, until it is ever proven Pete, or more specifically USC, did anything wrong, they are always going to face false charges, spurned by jealousy from Yahoo, LSU, East Coast, West Coast, people who just have an axe to grind.
Pete has been at USC for 6 years. USC has won 2 more national championships, 3 more Heismans, been to the most BCS bowl wins of any school, will be ranked #1 again this year with a terrifying defense, keeps getting the best recruiting classes, and the school itself continues to shoot up the academic ranks. In all that, there has not been one loss of scholarship, sanctions or bowl bans. Have there been reported and rumored "issues" from people? (photo left: Joe McKnight) All the time. Goes with the territory. Until such time as Pete gets nailed by the NCAA (or USC does), it is what it is: people taking shots hoping something, anything sticks, since beating USC on the football field has become almost an impossible task.
Take the sh*tty Big-10, that got killed in the big bowls this year by USC and Florida: many of the Big-10 people are screaming about Ron Zook out recruiting all of those crap Midwestern teams, including the criminals at Ohio State. "Zook must be cheating at Illinois!! Zook must be cheating!" Now, take that attitude, add the wins and Heismans of USC, and you see how amazing it is Pete has endured and nothing has stuck - pure jealousy and people crying over being outrecruited.
In fact, Zook is not a good game day coach, but 20 of the 22 players that started for Florida when they toyed with Big-10 Buckeyes were all Zook recruits!
Therefore, bring it on: USC has lost more players to the NFL than anybody, yet we just keep winning. USC has the most national championships of any school, and the most Heismans. When you are that successful and that good, the rest of college football gets envious and tries to take you down with rumor, since they can't do so on the field.
